Sion-Panvel Expressway
Accelerating Progress in the fastest growing Metropolitan area
The Sion Panvel Expressway is a 25 km city expressway serving the city of Mumbai, It is one of the busiest and most important roads in the Mumbai Metropolitan Area. IVRCL Infrastructure & Projects, in a joint venture, has emerged as the lowest bidder for the 25 km Sion-Panvel expressway and has been awarded the project. The project envisages expanding the existing bitumen road into a 10-lane concrete expressway between the BARC junction at Sion and the Kalamboli junction at Panvel with three flyovers and 10 underpasses. The project would be executed on a build-operate-transfer (toll) basis.
New Panvel is strategically located on the eastern side of the Mumbai-Bangalore National Highway (NH-4) and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. It is just 5 km away from the proposed Navi Mumbai International airport.. Panvel is surrounded by some major MIDC managed regions. Indian Industry majors like Larsen & Toubro Limited, Reliance, Hindustan Organics Chemicals Ltd., ONGC, IPCL are based around Panvel providing mass employment. The JNPT port is also located nearby. A Reliance SEZ is also coming up in the vicinity. New SEZs declared by Government are coming up around Panvel. Proposals are underway for Panvel Mega City Project to be implemented by MMRDA with investment by many foreign firms. The megacity will have an Energy City, Information Technology and Telecom City, and Entertainment City. The first phase is expected to be complete by 2014 while the entire project will be ready by 2020.
Sion is a railway station on the Mumbai suburban railway on the Central Railway line and home to prestigious educational institutes. As many as 1,50,000 passenger car units (PSUs) ply on this road between Sion and Panvel. Besides cutting down on travel time, the other benefits of this road widening are the increase in traffic and trade activities, the entry of more businesses in the region and simultaneously the addition of infrastructural developments.
